CERS Annual Meeting Brings Change in Board Chairs; Ends Legislative Committee

The County Employees Retirement System (CERS) Board of Trustees held their annual meeting on Monday, naming a new board chairperson and changing a bylaw.

The board elected George Cheatham as the next chairperson of the CERS Board of Trustees. He replaces Betty Pendergrass, who has been CERS board chair since the CERS formed in 2021. Cheatham and Pendergrass split the internal vote 3-3 before Pendergrass opted to bow out and allow Cheatham to replace her as chair.

Mike Foster was elected Vice Chair of the 9-person board.

With a 6-2 vote, the board also elected to amend its bylaws and shutter its standing legislative committee, opting to deal with legislative issues and specific legislation on an ad hoc basis. A majority of the board’s thinking on the issue was that legislation should be fronted by the KPPA executive director and not the trustees.
