Senate Democrats Elect Leadership

Kentucky Senate Democrats elected leadership for the next two years. Senator Gerald Neal (D-Louisville) will serve as the Minority Floor Leader, replacing Senator Morgan McGarvey (D-Louisville), who resigned his seat effective Jan. 2, 2023, after winning a congressional race in November. This is Senator Neal’s first election to a leadership role.

Current Minority Caucus Chair Reggie Thomas (D-Lexington) retained that position. Senator David Yates (D-Louisville) will serve as Minority Whip, replacing Dennis Parrett, who did not seek reelection. Yates first won a seat in the Senate in the 2020 election after serving for ten years on the Louisville Metro Council.

The Senate Democrat caucus consists of seven members, with Republicans holding 31 seats.
